The Swan Inn Dawlish

1/10/2011. Dawlish.

Reputed to have been built in 1642 which explains why the swan is white and not black.

White Swans only in 1642? Sorry John, I don't follow... :)

The Black Swans that have become the logo of Dawlish are actually Aussies. Not sure when the first ones arrived but I would guess in the last 100 years or so. I will investigate....

Just about as old as I thought...
The black swans of Dawlish were introduced to the town in 1906 from New Zealand by John Nash, a Dawlish-borne man who emigrated during adulthood but paid frequent visits to the town. The swan has been the town emblem for over 40 years.
